Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPIOTR MACHALSKI Piotr Machalski, who was born on the 21st day of March 1911 in Trembowla, Poland, died peacefully on January 2, 2004, at the St. Josephs Residence in Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his wife Tekla (Tinny) in 1998. Piotr was transported from Poland in March 1940 into exile in Siberia, Russia. In 1942 he joined the Polish Army, which was being organized at that time in Russia. In March of the same year he left for the Middle East and continued on to Palestine as a member of the 3rd Polish Battalion "The Carpathians" with which he continued to serve as a gunman of the Heavy Machine Gun Unit throughout the Italian Campaign, including "Monte Cassino and Bologna." In 1946 he arrived in England with the 2nd Polish Corps. In 1947 his wife joined him there, after spending six years in Russia. In 1948, they both came to Canada, where Piotr worked for 28 years for the C.N.R., until his retirement in 1976. Piotr was a long time member of the "S.P.K." Polish Combatants Association, Branch #13, and the Canadian Legion. He was also a member of the Holy Ghost Fraternity since his arrival in Canada. Piotr leaves to mourn, his nephews, Michael Machalski of Calgary, AB and Michal Machalski of Gdansk, Poland; his niece Anne Scully of Edmonton, AB; his sister-in-law Zdzislawa Machalski and cousin Stella with husband Lawrence Torack of Winnipeg; distant family in both Canada and Poland, as well as many friends. His family would like to thank the staff of St. Josephs Residence for their kindness and dedication in caring for Piotr over the past three years. Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 6, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Church, 341 Selkirk Ave. with Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Ghost Cemetery.
